You and your 8- to 12-year-old child are invited to participate in a study examining the roles of the gut microbiome and the lived environment in children crossing roads with traffic.

To be eligible, your child must:

  • Be 8-12 years old.

  • Have normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing.

  • Be fluent in written and spoken English.

  • Be able to stand or walk for 30 minutes without an assistive device.

  • Be willing to provide biological samples (e.g., stool, urine)

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing.

  • Be fluent in written and spoken English.

  • Be willing to assist their child in providing biological samples (e.g., stool, urine)

Participation involves two 90-minute visits to the College of Public Health on the University of Iowa campus. Children will wear a virtual reality headset and cross roads in a virtual environment, and complete computer tasks to assess executive function. Parents will be asked to complete questionnaires about their child and themselves. Parents will also be asked to collect stool, urine, toenail clipping, and hair samples from their child at home with provided materials and instructions. Parents will not be asked to collect their own samples. Parents and children will be paid $100 in total for completing all study procedures. Parking costs will also be reimbursed.
